Solar Power Banks for Africa: SONCAP, PVoC and Off-Grid Product Choices

Solar Charger 20000mAh, Portable Power Bank with Dual USB Ports Waterproof Battery Charger for Smartphones

Solar power banks make the most sense in places where the grid is unreliable, and in much of Africa that is daily life, not an emergency. For distributors in Nigeria, Kenya and neighboring markets, the opportunity is real, but so are two challenges: conformity programmes at the border, such as SONCAP in Nigeria and PVoC in Kenya, and customers who will judge the product on how it performs every day.

This guide is for importers and distributors in African markets sourcing solar power banks and emergency products from China. It covers the conformity programmes, product choices for off-grid use, what to tell customers, and what to send us for a quote. Conformity rules depend on product category and HS code, so confirm requirements for your goods with the standards body or an approved inspection company before shipping.

Conformity Programmes at the Border

Country Programme How it works
Nigeria SONCAP (Standards Organisation of Nigeria Conformity Assessment Programme) A Product Certificate from an accredited agent, then a SONCAP Certificate for each shipment. SON product registration is separate. Batteries and chargers are among products with restricted certification routes, so ask how your power bank is classified.
Kenya PVoC (Pre-Export Verification of Conformity) by KEBS Shipments subject to PVoC need a Certificate of Conformity from an authorized KEBS PVoC agent before shipment. It is a mandatory customs document.
Other markets Varies Some countries use destination inspection instead of pre-export programmes. Check with your forwarder.

Approved agents such as Bureau Veritas, Intertek, SGS and TÜV run these programmes. They usually ask for test reports, product photos, invoices and sometimes a physical inspection of the shipment in China. Book the inspection before the goods are packed, so it does not delay loading.

Products for Off-Grid Customers

About 5% of our export volume goes to Africa. Customers here use solar power banks every day, which changes what matters:

  • More solar area. Foldable or multi-panel models capture more energy than a single small panel. Our 25,000 mAh-class solar charger uses four panels, for example.
  • Useful light. A built-in LED flashlight or lamp often matters as much as phone charging.
  • Several outputs. Families share one power bank across several phones.
  • Rugged housing. Dust, drops and rain are daily conditions.
  • Heat tolerance. Over-temperature protection and honest guidance about heat. See our hot climate guide.
  • Hand crank backup. For the rainy season, models with a crank work without sun. See our hand crank vs solar comparison.

Be Honest About Solar Charging

Off-grid customers often charge from solar alone, so they will notice exaggerated claims quickly. A small panel in good sun adds energy slowly, and a full refill of a large battery can take several days. Good product copy says:

  • Charge from a wall or USB source whenever available
  • Use solar daily to top up
  • Choose multi-panel models if solar is the main source
  • Expect less in cloudy and rainy seasons

Honest claims protect your reputation with resellers, which matters more than a strong first sale.

Shipping and Documents

  • UN38.3 test summary and SDS/MSDS for lithium batteries
  • Test reports for the conformity programme
  • Commercial invoice, packing list and certificates for each shipment
  • Sea freight is normal for distributor volumes

See our lithium battery shipping guide for transport classes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do power banks need SONCAP for Nigeria?

Products regulated by SON need SONCAP certificates. Confirm the classification of your power bank with SON or an accredited agent.

What is PVoC for Kenya?

KEBS’s Pre-Export Verification of Conformity. Shipments subject to PVoC need a Certificate of Conformity from an authorized agent before shipment.

Can a solar power bank be charged by solar only?

Yes, but slowly. Multi-panel models work better when solar is the main power source.

Which features matter most for off-grid users?

Solar area, a useful light, several outputs, a rugged housing and protection against heat.
